When one thinks of a lantern they think of the traditional “olden days” lamp that was used before time of electricity. These lanterns were simply lit candles protected by a glass or metal console to keep its flame remaining lit as long as possible. It was mainly used as a guidance for those in travels or to simply light a room or other particular area.
In the modern day of electricity, lanterns are almost obsolete. Instead of its use being for the primary purpose of illuminating one’s surroundings, the lantern has more of an aesthetic purpose. In the chinese culture, lanterns are often used at special events. Chinese lanterns have also integrated its function with the hot air balloon. Sky lanterns or flying lanterns are some terms that may be used when describing these eye-capturing pieces. Like the function of a hot air balloon, which heats some balloon like synthetic material to allow it to be airborne, flying or sky lanterns online have the same fucntion, except they are simply shaped like the traditional lantern of the “olden days”. They are used at festivals and carnivals like firework shows in American tradition. Ironically enough, firework expeditions are another entertaining display tha was first introduced by the chinese culture.
The chinese culture has been sponsoring these lantern filled sky events for years and it has become tradition just as annual firework shows. The sky is illuminated with remarkably lit lanterns by the thousands, for all to see and enjoy during the ground festivities.
