Flying Lanterns , sometimes called Chinese Lanterns or sky lanterns , are lights that float in the air on the same principles as hot-air balloons. Flying lanterns are made from a paper type material in a bulb shape and have a small heat source at the bottom such as a candle or a fuel heat canister. Once the temperature in the bulb is hot, a flying lantern can rise several hundreds of feet into the air and travel for miles before the candle goes out causing the lantern to fall back to the ground.

Even one of these can beautiful site, but a large number of them can rival fireworks displays. Although some people worry about the candles causing fires, as long as proper precautions are taken, such as not releasing the lantern under a tree, then the candle will burn out before the lantern returns to the ground, so there would be no concern for a fire to be created. A flying Lantern is fairly simple to deploy.

Find a large open area where there are no trees or buildings that the lantern can become entangled in and check with all local laws in that area to be sure you are allowed to use it for releasing lanterns. Unfold the lantern in the area, gently fill the bulb with air and attach the heat source in the proper manner. Ignite the heat source and hold the lantern up until the air inside has heated enough to lift the flying lantern. Once it is ready, simply release and enjoy the site.
